About the Pre-Apprenticeship Training Program in the TRADES Industry:

Interested in pursuing employment in the trades while also learning about clean energy?

With the help of Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC), the MassHire North Shore Workforce Board’s (MH-NSWB), this Sustainable Energy Pre-Apprenticeship Trades Training Program seeks to provide individuals living on the North Shore an opportunity to receive grant approved training in the trades industry, with job placement assistance provided by MASSHIRE North Shore Career Center.

This clean energy workforce training initiative will work with partners and service residents in the North Shore region of Massachusetts, with a specific focus on Environmental Justice (EJ) neighborhoods and communities. Job opportunities after completing this training may include titles such as Construction Laborer, Building Maintenance Worker, Solar Panel Installer, Carpentry Apprentice, HVAC Installer, Pipe /Steam Fitters, and Wind Turbine Technicians. Additionally, future job opportunities for graduates of this program may include assisting with the construction of the future Salem Wind Port. The goal of this program is to provide interested individuals in EJ communities an opportunity to connect and build direct pathways to employment through MH-NSWB and help fill diversity gaps within the clean energy sector.

What are clean energy and green jobs?

In today’s world, we are moving towards cleaner energy and green and environmentally-just sustainable work and living choices. We see increasing adoption of :

Construction Laborer

The green economy needs skills and training that are currently in high demand, and will continue to be for the future. In 2010, the Massachusetts clean energy industry has experienced 73% job growth, adding over 104,000 clean energy workers by the end of year 2021.

What jobs and pathways would participating in this training prepare me for?

Construction trades are necessary for a multitude of projects and many of the skills you learn can be transferred among the clean jobs and trades. The pre-apprenticeship program will prepare individuals for entry level construction trades jobs, including jobs as piledrivers, carpenters, electricians and operating engineers. This program will start you on a path towards obtaining employment where you could install solar panels, work in construction of the seaport, support assembling or installing wind turbines, or work on other important infrastructure and building development projects.

What will this pre-apprenticeship program provide?

This pre-apprenticeship program is a training program designed to provide an introduction to construction trades jobs, provide an overview of key skills and prepare individuals for entry level construction trades jobs, where they will continue to have access to more in-depth trade specific skills. This may include entry into a union apprenticeship program or a job in a non-union construction trades company that provides on the job training.

What happens after the training? How do I get a job?

Even before training ends, participants will have an opportunity to hear from a variety of individuals currently working in the construction trades and work with the team at MassHire North Shore Career Center to develop a resume and start their job search. Career Coaches will work with each individual to determine their specific goals, including specific construction trades they are interested in working in and whether they are interested in applying for a union apprenticeship or direct employment at a local employer. Union trades application processes are on a set schedule throughout the year, so your Career Coach will also work with graduates to find short-term work while they wait for the union apprenticeship program application window.

Will I be part of the team installing the wind turbines?

Please view the attached 3 videos. There are many aspects of large projects such as offshore wind even before the wind turbines are installed. Some individuals participating in this program may help construct the Port, which will be used to deploy the parts and machinery needed to install the wind turbines. For other individuals, they will start their career working on other construction trades projects, building their skills and experience that may position them to work on on-shore and offshore aspects of an offshore wind project.

I don’t have a car. Is there support to help me get to training?

There will be stipends available for qualified candidates to help with transportation costs and miscellaneous expenses.

Will the training be offered in multiple languages?

We will work with each qualified candidate to address any concerns that may arise. Depending on their needs, we will guide eligible candidates towards the services that are most likely to result in a successful job placement.
